TTT: 3D Textiles … June 3 2017

On Saturday June 3 thirteen lucky WAFTA members joined Katrina Virgona for her 2nd Armature workshop. I say lucky because at the first workshop questions were asked about using chicken wire and Katrina expanded the materials list to include 1.5 m of mesh for each student and demonstrated the different ways to use it to create interesting shapes. Several workshop participants were…

The recent Bag to Paper making Textile Technique Toolbox workshop with Pauline White added more textile techniques to the toolboxes of even more WAFTA members – from beginners to the experienced. The wet weather did not deter anyone and productivity was high throughout the day. Textile Technique Toolbox: Eco-Dye! April 4 2017

WAFTA member, and experimental eco-dyer, Margaret Ford introduced the idea of colouring fabric and thread using readily available plants and simple mordants and “assists” to another fully booked class. Fun Spin! with Anne Williams: April 1 2017

Our fun while learning the basics of drop spindle spinning at Anne Williams’ recent Fun Spin! workshop was palpable. Anne Williams, a very generous fibre and textile artist and enthusiastic member of WAFTA is an experienced practitioner and teacher across a range of creative fields including basketry,…

While I’m sure the many attendees to this workshop and machine embroiderers in general have their own preferred embroidery thread, Meredith’s was Rapos Gem Collection.  Rapos, a Thai manufacture has an online store.  Happy Embroidery is the only Australian based importer. Click here for details of the Gem Collection of threads from Happy Embroidery.  A PDF of the colours is attached….

A mix of all ages enjoyed Meredith’s carefully planned and sensitively delivered workshop this week to learn some complex and for many, new processes.             On Day 1 everyone experimented, adjusted thread tension, drew and stitched onto woven and water-soluble fabrics, creating a range of experimental embroidered artworks in themes of their choice. After lunch Meredith guided the attendees through explorations of…

Fabulous Ferrous: 2nd Edition – Kerrie Argent

Such focus and concentration as the nine of us dipped and dripped papers in various orders into our four solutions, watching with excitement as papers changed before our eyes. Once the trialling of ordered sequences was over, there was nothing to stop us as we experimented with double dipping and a variety of papers to try and replicate previous effects….

Martien van Zuilen: Felted Pods and Vessels Workshop – August 20

My peripatetic assignment on Saturday August 20 was to check out Martien van Zuilen’s Felted Pods and Vessels one day workshop at Craft House. Arriving toward the end of the day I was truly impressed with the high quality of works being finished – difficult to believe that even beginners could produce such seductively interesting objects in the space of a…
